On such a gloomy, muggy day like this, may we suggest spending a day in Yardley Borough?
- Start off with a morning stroll to Starbucks and try their new toffee mocha latte.
- Just steps away from Starbucks, pamper yourself to serenity at Face and Body Spa. They always have specials going on at the spa, and everyone from the staff to the owner treats you like you belong there!
- Grab a quick lunch at Yardley Pizza where they have more than just pizza (though their pizza is very good and only a $1 a slice on Tuesdays!)
- Next, treat yourself to a beautiful floral arrangement from Petals and Paper located right next to Yardley Pizza. Grab a box of premium loose leaf tea or two for you to take home so you can relax some more on your favorite chair, sipping our delicious cup of tea!
- Repeat as necessary!

Wedding 101

Here are some helpful tidbits that may assist couples in planning their wedding flowers. There are generally three categories under which your flower needs fall: personal flowers, ceremony, and reception. Your personal flowers include bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres, nosegays, heath wreaths, and baskets. Basically, they are flowers that the wedding party either carries or wears. Your ceremony flowers include aisle decorations and runner, ceremony arrangements, altar arrangements, Chuppahs, and anything else that needs to be adorned with flowers for the ceremony. Lastly, reception flowers include arrangements for cocktail tables, place car table, dinner table centerpieces, restrooms, buffets, and anywhere you think flowers would look nice in your reception.

When should you book your wedding florist? This depends on how long you have to plan your wedding and how busy your florist is. Generally, you should start talking to your florist about 6-8 months before your wedding date and sign a contract with them about 4-6 months before the big day. Depending on the size of the wedding, some florists only book one wedding per date. So, keep this in mind if your date is in the middle of wedding season!

Clients often ask how much of their budget they should expect to allocate to wedding flowers. Typically, clients spend 8-10% of their entire budget on flowers. Clients from Philadelphia and Bucks Counties typically spend $4,000-5,000 on their wedding flowers. Generally, though, the more people in your wedding party and guest list, the more you will spend on flowers. This is important to remember in the early stages of wedding planning when you can somewhat control the number of people you'd like to include in your wedding.

While we highly recommend trusting your flower needs with the professionals, we understand that some clients turn to diy books and magazines for their wedding flower ideas. With the economy being the way it is, we completely understand the decision to do so. In this case, consult your local florists to learn more about what types of flowers are in season during your wedding month and how to handle and care for loose flowers once you purchase them.

What is that???

Many of our boutique visitors point to this plant and ask, "What is that? It is so interesting and unique!" Well, we think so and that's why we use this in a lot of our arrangements and even bridal bouquets! You may call them cabbage flowers, but it is called kale -- not the kind we eat but the kind with which we decorate! There are lots of different kinds and colors of kale. This one happens to have a creme center with various shades of green hugging the center. What do you think? Do they look better on the dinner table or in your hands in bouquets? =)

Cymbidium Orchids

One of our favorite flowers to incorporate into our designs is cymbidium orchids. They are beautiful in arrangements of any size and shape. They are wonderful for any occasions including birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. Even a single flower from this plant can be exquisite in corsages and boutonnieres. The color of the orchid is always so vibrant and fresh!

What a fun-filled Friday!

Wow, was it busy in the boutique today! We met so many wonderful Yardleyans who came into the boutique to share stories about themselves and the town...oh and picked up a card or two or bouquets of flowers. We had a chance to share our own stories with someone special today. Petra, a reporter from Yardley News, stopped by our boutique today to interview us and learn more about our new store on Main Street. How fun it was to chat with her! She brought her voice recorder along with a minicam. After a busy day at the boutique, we're not sure how camera ready we were, nonetheless it was fun to talk about our boutique with Petra and we look forward to reading the article coming out in a couple of weeks. We'll share it with all of you when it comes out! Stay tuned!

Die Hard Love for a Die Hard Fan

This arrangement was made especially for a husband who is a die hard Phillies fan! We are all very excited that the Phillies are #1 again!!!

Holidays Are Already Around the Corner???

Already we are seeing holiday commercials on TV and decorations in retail spaces! Are we skipping Halloween and Thanksgiving now? No, we don't think so! However, our diligent clients are already coming into the boutique with their holiday invitation and greeting card ideas. We haven't started stocking up on our evergreens and hollies quite yet, but we are starting to brainstorm our ideas for holiday centerpieces and decorations. Send us your ideas to petalsandpaperboutique@gmail.com

One Color Palette = Timeless

We received a request today for an arrangement all in one color. These one-color palette arrangements are not unique to weddings. They look beautiful in our homes and in our offices.

Why doesn't P&P use wire services?

Many of our competitors use wire services to send flowers to their clients. Petals and Paper intentionally does not use wire services for the following reasons:
- We like to know where our flowers come from and where our flowers are going.
- We value personal relationships we build with our clients. Often the best way to do is to interact with our clients face to face or over the phone. If you have trouble remembering your anniversary or your wife's birthday, we remember for you!
- We prefer to serve the communities in which we live and work. Though our boutique is contemporary and creates many modern pieces for our clients, we still appreciate the old-fashioned way (sans emails and texts) of getting to know our clients!
- Our clients know exactly what their recipients are receiving from us because they select their flowers and arrangements.
- Since we are not electing to pay all the fees that wire services demand from florists, our clients get the most for their hard earned money! Your $35 bouquet can actually include your favorites roses and even calla lilies!
- Our clients don't have to choose their flowers and arrangements from an album that hasn't been modified in years. Our clients can create their own arrangements that take into consideration their taste and budget! Since we know our clients very well, we know the types of flowers we should always try to keep in our boutique! We're always, of course, open to ideas that our clients bring to us. With couple days' advance notice, we can get almost any flower they wish to include in their future bouquets and arrangements!

For those of you who wish to read more about why P&P and other upscale flower boutiques opt to arrange and deliver their own flowers, check out this article: http://www.floristdetective.com/wst_page13.aspx.

What is the meaning of flowers?

Many flowers have important symbolic meanings. The practice of assigning meanings to flowers is known as floriography. Red roses, for example, symbolize love, beauty, and passion. This is why so many clients choose to express their feelings with red roses -- especially during Valentine's Day season! Poppies are a symbol of consolation in time of death. We also see many irises and lilies during these times of remembrance because they symbolize resurrection and life. Daisies are a symbol of innocence and they are often used to adorn flower girls come wedding season. There are so many other flowers that carry special meanings and symbolize many things. It is no wonder artists like Georgia O' Keefe and Diego Rivera painted so many beautiful portraits of flowers!
